Vacation with baby in Croatia
Our first long vacation with baby in Croatia was a success.
Croatia is among the first options for vacation in the region. I have the impression that everybody has been thereĀ at least once. š But it is just me.
We had a baby, we needed a vacation, preferably at the seaside and we thought of Croatia. We calculated that by car it will take us up to 6h to drive to the desired location.
The starting point was Bratislava. What we liked the most was the fact that we could control the amounts of stops. With a baby you never know. F was 4 months old. He was fine in the car for about 2 h after which he beganĀ to fuss.

Fortunately our car was big enough for all our luggage. Who has kids knows that the luggage can be tricky. š In addition, the summer clothes are much more light than the winter clothes. So double space!
The car seat was in place and F was accustomed to it. For moving around we took with us the stroller but also the baby carrier.
We started our ride early in the morning because we wanted to arrive there in the afternoon. F was in a better mood in the mornings and we calculated that he will have two naps in the car.
I had a bottle with breast milk in the unlikely event he wanted the bottle. He had moods, that meant that sometimes he wanted the bottle and sometimes not so much. Oh, and I packed the breast pump.
As predicted we had to stop every two hours! We usually stopped at gas stations. Most of the gas stations in Austria have a changing table. In case you need to use Ā it is better if you wipe off the dust, germs etc. before placingĀ the changing pad. Ā š We ended up changing F most of the times in the car. I just felt more comfortable with the environment .
With respect to feeding F didn’t like the bottle so I would breastfeed him at each stop. He was a bit more fussy than usual because of the long drive.
Vacation with baby in Croatia- Selce
We rented an apartmentĀ on the ground floor via booking.com. Ā I didn’t want to carry a lot of things up and down the stairs. And since we planned to spend at least one week there we did not want to be very cramped. Because it was not the peak season the prices were a bit lower. We chose something close to the water because again we did not want to carry things for long distances.
Selce is a very nice and pitoresque village in Croatia with access to the sea. There were a few tourists but it was not overcrowded . The village doesn’t have a proper sand beach but you can have some sun tan.
The place has quite a few restaurants and terraces to enjoy the Balkan food. Some dishes were common with the Romanian ones. I would say that even the service is a little similar. More so thanĀ the Slovak or Czech one.
We spent most of our time there taking longĀ walks, exploring the place and eating some local food. In fact we rediscovered “burek” there. They have some lovely patisserie with fresh products. Since F was so small we did not plan to spend a lot of time sun bathing.
Vacation with baby in Croatia – Crikvenica
Next to Selce is Crikvenica and since we had the car we couldn’t miss it. It is a lovely town and the beach is quite nice. When we got there they were celebrating a sweets festival with even some music on the main square. The restaurants facing the sea are well sought by tourists. For the view and for the food.
We also took a place at one of the restaurants and after placing our order we had a small accident with F . Something that required a new change of clothes! ? They did not have a changing table but they were most helpful in freeing the top counter of a small fridge! ?
Vacation with baby in Croatia- Krk island
In the neighborhood of Selce there are a few islands which are accessible by car. The main land was connected to Krk island by a big bridge. We had to pay extra toll for the road . In Croatia you pay while you drive and you use the highway. They have a different system than Slovakia, Hungary , Czech Republic. It is closer to the American or Italian system.
Vacation with baby in Croatia -Garicia
You can spend a lot of time on the island but we chose to see a tiny village called Garica where we had an early lunch. The weather was a bit windy so we really enjoined a good portion of Ā soup. Oh, something else we noticed regarding the soup. They brought us a big bowl of soup like for two servings and a half. And you help yourself as much as you want.
There was not much to see there except a small square, very old historical houses and a cute local art museum.
Vacation with baby in Croatia-Vrbnik
We also visited on Krk the more famous and more visited Vrbnik. The parking was a bit problematic there. And the streets are very narrow. But the center is amazing.
The place is known for the wine and in all small shops you can purchase some wine. You can opt for a bottle or for just a glass. š
The old center has stone small streets and we were happy that we had the baby carrier with us instead of the stroller. An old church is protecting the place and in particular the sailors.
The altitude of the city is high enough to offer you perfect views in all directions.
Some of my favorite parts in this vacation were the morning breakfasts on our very big terrace, admiring the sunrise and later the sunset. The food was also very good. And although we didn’t spend a lot of time at the beach we really loved the crystal water!
