Vacation with baby in Tallahassee- last stop in Florida
Vacation with baby in Tallahassee meant a two days stop. Florida was the state where we spent most of time and we were making the final stop in Tallahassee. The distance between Tampa and Tallahassee was shorter than our previous rides and we arrived in Tallahassee in the afternoon.
This time we slept in Courtyard By Marriott Tallahassee and we had a very nice room. I chose the site Priceline when booking the room and I went with the option Name your price. Basically you pick the area where you went to stay and the stars that the hotel should have and you get a ” surprise “. ? Probably this not for everybody but I like it. It saved us a few good dollars and as it turn out our surprises were all good.
A place to stay while in Tallahassee
The hotel was very nice, very close to the main road but the trees and the parking made it seemed protected. We had internet and parking included We had a special SIM card with Internet but we preferred to look for hotels that had internet .
The room was very nice and big. What I will put as minus was the front desk/ reception. They were not very friendly. And another thing was that although we had the room already paid they asked for a card and blocked some money in case of possible extra expenses. Is called incidental. And I didn’t know about it till the money left my current account. At that point I went back to ask. Is not something I encounter previously.
Vacation with baby in Tallahassee – City Center
After we unloaded the car and refreshed a bit we went to see the city. On the map it didn’t look like it was very far unfortunately you can not walk till there because there is no sidewalk. So we had to go by car. There is a beautiful and I mean beautiful parking lot right in the center. The ceiling is made of glass and it looks like it could be part of an art house.
And the downtown looks so cozy and charming. Tallahassee was such a nice surprise! We didn’t have a lot of time to read in advance but we were a bit skeptics. We were very wrong! Tallahassee represent better the South style in my opinion.
In the center there is a pretty sidewalk with many famous quotes, full of meanings.
We took a bit of time and read quite a few of them. They were so full of history!
The buildings were gorgeous, there were many terraces and many young professionals or students meeting to have a drink and to chat in the evening. We also noticed more people dressed smart.
The city looked clean and loved. And there were many old trees and green vegetation.
New buildings next to old ones, but somehow they fitted together.
Unfortunately we were getting hungry and it was getting late so we couldn’t explore the center as much as we wanted but what we did manage was beautiful.
Vacation with baby in Tallahassee- Seafood
It was getting late and F was getting tired so we went to eat. Very near to our hotel there were some restaurants and after a bit of debate we went to eat at Wharf Express . Is a seafood restaurant that functions like a fast food. They called it casual seafood. 🙂
We ordered at the cashier and the food was brought to our table. We order a fish plate and it was very good. And the prices were reasonable. We noticed that although the place was not packed there were a few people having dinner too.
Vacation with baby in Tallahassee – Automobile museum
After a good night sleep we had a full day to explore Tallahassee. In the end we chose to see Automobile museum.
We read TripAdvisor comments on the subject and we decided to give it a try. It was the first museum that we visited. And it was worth it! You have plenty to see! You can of course admire many cars! ? There are all kind of luxury cars in different shape and colors. The most beautiful in my opinion are the sports car! ? In the museum they have a few old cars , from the beginning of automobile!
They make for a beautiful history lesson. In the exposition there was also the funeral carriage (hearse) that carried Lincoln. There were even a few parts from old newspapers that described the events.
some interesting facts…
and something to always remember….
The museum is huge and aside from cars there are other collections. For example a collection of Steinway pianos! They are in beautiful condition!
Another collection is the collection of dolls! Of different sizes and different outfits.
On the ground floor there was an impressive collection of military badges/ medals from different countries.
The upper floor displayed a big collection of motorbikes and a few more cars!
In a corner there were the cars from Batman’s movies. The older movies. They looked very impressive especially if you are a Batman fan! ?
Another part of the floor was filled with boats. Some very old that looked so nice and polished!
If you have time you can have a closer look at the small cars
or the first cash registers.
Golf lovers have they own corner. Plus other small collections. The time spent in the museum it was a well spent time.
My baby at the museum
And little F didn’t cry at all . I had him most of the time in the baby carrier and he was fine checking the surroundings.
I could breastfeed him in the baby carrier and I used a scarf to cover myself and him. The museum was not crowded and that helped too. The museum has an elevator for the upper floor. Vacation with baby in Tallahassee at the Automobile museum was a success.
Vacation with baby in Tallahassee : Mission San Luis
The following day we were ready for the next part of the trip. But before going forward we stopped at Mission San Luis. And it was a great idea!!!
Is an open air reconstructed settlement . You can see and touch things but most of all you will find people who impersonate different characters from merchants to soldiers to priests to wives of merchants.
The reconstructed mission highlighted the lives of Apalachee and Spanish residents at the beginning of seventeen century. They did a great job in reconstructing the place where the agreements between the merchants took place. The person playing the role of the great merchant was very useful in providing information regarding those times. How the agreements took place , the routes that they used to move the goods, including the meaning of his clothes.
Reconstruction of the settlement includes a house used by the Spanish residents. How it was furnished and how the wives were preparing the meals.
Another part of the mission includes a garden. A gardener is providing details with respect to the vegetables that were cultivated on those days. His “historic script” was that of Spanish and a Apalachee descendent. And who was not very high on the social scale but he was not last.
Down the path there was the blacksmith . He was making tools right on the spot. You can admire the craftsmanship.
Other things to enjoy at Mission San Luis
The place is quite big, with many paths and an idyllic atmosphere . In one corner of the settlement there is a place for the army. The place where the soldiers were eating, training and sleeping. Or in some cases where they stored some grains. The visitors could admire archers and their technique . I believe you can even try to give it a shot. As mentioned before there were many characters around who were very helpful in providing historical information .
If you get closer to the entrance of the museum there is a church. The church was not very adorned and it was not very big. But had different rooms used for different purposes. The priests were also teachers. They were teaching the writing and reading. In one room they were storing plants and they were making a few medicines. The priests had a really important role in the settlement.
I really enjoyed this kind of interactive museum and lesson in history. I remember better the facts and the details. The fact that the weather was nice was really helpful and we could enjoy better the settlement. It was February but the temperature was close to 20 degree Celsius .
We were heading to Mobile so we couldn’t spend as much time as I wanted to. But we did manage to explore a bit. We started initially with the small museum and continue with the settlement . At certain hours they even play a small documentary. We also found out that the staff organized different classes in certain days. Classes that help people to learn the old ways of producing goods.
Vacation with baby in Tallahassee- small visit to Georgia
Since we were so close to the border with Georgia my husband proposed to drive by a bit. We stopped in Bainbridge. We only spent an hour or so. The town was quiet and sleepy at that hour. We really felt like tourists there because it was obvious that we were not from there. 🙂 The few people that we met realized that right away. We walked a bit in the center of the town and we admired the small but cute park.
After we managed to see so much we were wondering what will wait for us in Mobile-Alabama. We were ready to start the car and continue our journey…
