Danube Delta thoughts of vacation

We choose to see the places that are further away from home. We pick exotic countries to spend our vacations. Sometimes what we need and want is not that far away.

Because of my past I tried to see the world. I only managed to see a tiny part of it. I want to explore more! But I like to think that I started to appreciate the things that are near me too.

One of the great places that I discovered is Danube Delta.

Danube Delta- the amazing ecosystem

Many heard of Danube, the great river that passes 10 countries before emptying into the Black Sea. What is less known is that it creats a delta. It is the largest delta in Europen Union and the best preserved in Europe.

Well I knew these facts in theory because they thaught us in school but for different reasons I never went to see it with my own eyes. But then I wanted to show my husband something of Romania. Something that was different and beautiful…

Traveling by car to see Danube Delta

Danube Delta includes a lot of channels, streams, lakes, ponds. In certain areas you can only travel by boat. We decided to take a ferry from Galati to cross over to Tulcea county. The ferry transports both people and vehicles and is part of the cargo shipping company Navrom.

After we crossed Danube we headed towards Murighiol. We checked the map and the little village is accessible by car and one of the prime points to explore Danube Delta.

The road till Murighiol is not always very good but is manageable. The villages are very close to each other so you can not drive fast. On the other hand you can admire the view which is quite unique.

Although there are many new buildings in the village Murghiol has maintained an authentic air and in some area is quite unspoiled by the new technologies .

In fact we took a stroll after we checked in and we admired the old houses with their reed roofs. Some even offered accommodation .

Accomodation in Danube Delta

I like to make the reservation in advance. And in this case I used a Romanian site Turisinfo that is focusing on agroturism but not only. Unfortunately is not in English. Which is a shame because the prices there are unbeatable. But if you know somebody who can help…

However when you book something in Danube Delta have in mind that in summer the temperatures are very high. And not all places have AC. That’s why it pays to check this detail when you book your room.

And one other important factor is that you should ensure that you have a good insects repellent with you. The area is famous for the water, fauna and flora. 🙂 Mosquitoes can be annoying if you are not prepared! 😉

Boat trip in Danube Delta

In Murighiol like in other places in the region you can rent a boat with a guide. Many locals are earning extra money from this activity. We also arranged for a few hours trip with the boat. After all this is one of the main reason we went there.

I decided to go in the morning because the temperature is so much nicer. But also because I understood that you can see more in the morning when everything is a bit more quiet.

And what a great experience that was. To wonder how some houses were built when they are surrounded by small water channels. To see birds and flowers that you never saw in your entire life. Not even in books! Unless you study in that field.

And to see the way the sun kisses the water.

And the yellow water-lily!!! So many and so beautiful! The boat trip was one of the best for us! The feeling was incredible! In many instances we felt like we were alone in a secret place. It was totally worth it!

If in Danube Delta you should eat…

I have a friend who said that she doesn’t trust restaurants that offer dishes with fresh fish when there is no water near by! Which definitely made me think twice before ordering fish ! But that is not the case in Danube Delta! There is plenty of fresh fish! In same places you can buy fresh fish directly from fishermen .

This is another source of income in the region. You can even join a fishing trip if you are so inclined.

But getting back to food in Murighiol you have the option to try the local fish in the restaurants. Not so many but tasty. Or you can go in to the next villages that are not very far away. They have also other traditional dishes that you can experiment. 🙂

What else in Danube Delta

Well that depends on how long you plan to stay and what you are interested into. In the regions there are some famous churches , ruins from the Roman and Dacic period too. There are some archeological site that you can visit. You can go to Sulina or even Tulcea.

If you do not plan a long road trip than you can fly to Bucharest and even Constanta and from there you can rent a car. Or you can use other means of transport.

I recommend to see Danube Delta if you want to explore something other than the usual. Or if you are interested in places that are not marked by the last trend in technology, quite the opposite!
