Medical insurance in Slovakia

Medical insurance in Slovakia

One of the first things that we did after we moved to Slovakia was to apply for a medical insurance. If you are employed the employer will ask you anyway for the medical insurance card in order to pay the contribution.

What to choose as medical inssurance

In Slovakia as far as I understood there are three options: VšZP, Dôvera and Union. To be honest I never took the time to check which one is the best. But based on what I observed they are all accepted and they cover all kinds of medical care.  Most of the people are concerned with getting a GP. One who speaks English is a very frequent question among the foreigners.

If you have medical insurance then you can opt for any doctor and they accept you or not. They take in consideration their number of patients and the medical insurance that you have.

The public sector for the medical care is quite big so you should not face any difficulties in finding a doctor. Except maybe due to language barrier, or a particular specialist. Usually in the public sector the costs are covered by insurance or the patients are covering some parts.

Private sector

There is also a private sector for medical care. That means that you still need to have one of those three medical insurances and to pay an extra fee for the private care.

We chose Union as medical insurance because they had an office very close to where we lived. I know I should have done more research but I relied on my husband and we were in a hurry.

I was mentioning previously that I experienced communism and the long queues so I really, really, really dislike waiting in line. That’s why I preferred to pay some extra money to get private care and fix appointments.

My option was ProCare as it was one of the employee benefits at our company. But there are other clinics, including a private hospital. The additional benefit is that you have most of the doctors in one place and most likely at least some will speak English.

Stay healthy!
