Public transport in Bratislava

Using public transport?

We got the jobs and we got the flat. The next step was figuring out how to get from one to the other on a daily basis. We had a car but we couldn’t count on both of us using it. I always preferred the public transport because I am not an experienced driver. Fortunately Bratislava has a good system of public transportation and it is fairly cheap.

The system relies on trams, trolleys and buses and recently they started to replace old vehicles with new ones. All of the new tram cars and buses have low platforms. That is a great news especially for parents, because now they didn’t have to rely on strangers or driver to help them get the strollers inside and out of the vehicles. The persons in a wheelchair could not be happier either with this change.

How much you need to spend?

A short trip without any change is 70 cents and a longer one is 90 cents, in two zones in Bratislava. But there are different options and combinations: for seniors, for groups, parents with kids, day pass, weekend pass, multiple zones, etc

The distance between our flat and the workplace was 25 min by walk so when the weather was nice it made sense to me to do just that, walk. But then I preferred to sleep more in the morning or I had to stay in the office longer and taking the tram was so much faster.

I ended up buying a three months pass because it was more economical and it saved me time to buy a ticket every time.

If you just need to jump on the tram and forgot to buy a ticket then you can purchase your ticket by texting a blank SMS to number 1100 (70 min for 1 euro) but you need to do it immediately otherwise you risk a fine up to 500 euro in case of an inspection.
